What the houses divide
Twelve segments of the local sky, measured from the horizon at a given moment and place. See Ascendant for where the division starts.
House systems
Placidus, Whole Sign, Koch and Equal each cut the same sky differently. The engine in packages/astro defaults to Placidus.
Why the choice matters
At high latitudes Placidus houses distort badly, which is the usual argument for Whole Sign.
